The Best Golf Ball for EVERYONE?

The Best Golf Ball for EVERYONE?

Sorry, the “one-type-fits-all” golf ball doesn’t exist.

Every golfer looks for the golf ball that will give them the perfect combination of distance, control and feel all in the same ball.  In addition, the golfer expects optimum performance from that ball regardless of the type of course and an on any condition of green.

That is a lot to ask of that complicated little round, dimpled, elusive sphere.

But it gets even more complicated - Golf balls actually perform differently depending on the golfer’s swing, speed and impact angle.  Other considerations in ball selection include the firmness of the green or turf, the altitude of the course, temperature and wind conditions.

Obviously, there is no easy answer to finding the right ball.  Here are some commonly asked questions regarding this much-discussed subject.

Does humidity affect the flight of the ball?
Yes, the distance of flight slightly increases as the humidity increases.

Does the temperature affect the flight of the ball?
Yes, the distance of flight slightly increases as the weather gets warmer.  Conversely, cold weather can decrease distance dramatically.

Does the altitude of the course affect the flight of the ball?
Yes, the distance of flight increase significantly as the altitude increases.  This effect increases as launch angles increase.  The players that hit higher shots will benefit more from the altitude.

How much does wind (headwind or tailwind) affect distance?
There is more affect from headwinds than tailwinds.  As an example, a drive of 230 yards will increase by only 20 yards if there is a 20 mph tail wind, but will decrease by 25 yards into a 20 mph headwind.

What do the sales representatives mean when they talk about the feel of a golf ball?

The “Feel” of a ball can refer to a combination of factors, such as a ball's:

  • "Hotness" off the clubface (See below)
  • The hardness and workability of the cover
  • The sound the ball makes when struck by an iron or driver
In addition, the "Feel" depends on how the ball reacts with different types of clubface materials and this “Feel” will change depending on weather the golfer is putting, chipping, pitching or hitting a full iron or driver

Feel, then, is probably the most subjective attribute of any golf ball.

Is there “Good” spin and “Bad” spin?

Spin is a ”Bad” thing if there is too much spin and it causes the ball to climb excessively, or if there is too little spin to keep it in the air long enough.  The spin is not “Good” or “Bad”, the trick is producing the right amount for each type of shot.  (Talk to your golf pro)

What is meant by "Hotness" off the clubface?  (See above)
"Hotness" is a term used to describe a calculation of the golf balls COR (coefficient of restitution).  This principle is typically associated with drivers and is explained very effectively by Ed Weatherby in another article on this website.  With golf balls, "Hotness" relates to the terms "Firm Feel" vs." Soft Feel".

We hear a lot about compression – is compression important?
Compression refers to the extent a ball deforms when it is hit.  Due to the latest manufacturing technologies, compression does not affect distance as much as golfers may think.  But compression plays into that subjective “Feel” of a ball.  This becomes apparent not only on a full swing, but even how the ball comes off the putter.

Which ball is the “Longest” ball?
This is where this article began.  There is not one brand of golf ball or one type of construction that will produce the longest drives for all types of golfers.  However, the experts (And there are LOTS of these) pretty much agree on the following:

  • Balls with two-piece construction generally provide more roll.
  • Balls with two-piece construction generally travel further on an iron shot.
  • Players with slower swing speed usually think they will hit a harder ball further, but their lower spin rates will produce less distance in their longer irons and with their woods.
