Here is the only proven way to improve your putting. The four elements that will make you putt like a pro.

Putt Like a Pro

What percentage of 6-foot putts do you make?
What percentage of 6-foot putts do the pros make?

The answer to the second question may surprise you.  Here are some statistics:

4-foot putts = 80%
5-foot putts = 69%
6-foot putts = 58%
7-foot putts = 53%
8-foot putts = 47%
9-foot putts = 43%

What percentage to “regular” golfers make?  It’s safe to say that the percentages would come in a bit lower.

What can you do about it?  Well, here are four steps that you can take to improve your putting:  Practice, Practice, Practice and Practice.

Sorry, but no matter how much you read on the subject, practice is the only thing that will make you a better putter.  But not to leave it at that, here is a suggested drill that, if practiced, is GUARANTEED to improve your putting.

Before you begin this exercise, relax.  Make it fun.  Nothing will improve your putting (AND your entire game) as much as being relaxed.

1.  Use a dozen balls and set up six feet from the hole.  Find a place on the practice green that has no slope.

Start by practicing straight putts.  This will allow you to focus on your putting and not on the break of the green.  If you are missing a straight putt, it is easy to discern that it is your stroke that is defective.

2.  On each putt, make certain the putter head is moving straight back, then straight through the ball.

Make certain the putter face stays perpendicular to your putting line throughout the entire stroke –  even during the follow-through.

3.  Make the practice interesting by setting a goal for the number of putts that you will make in a row.  As you miss a putt, start your count over.  Gradually increase this goal until you are able to make the entire dozen.

4.  When you have completed steps 1 through 3, start again at step 1.

Note for step 1:
If you do not have access to a putting green, use your carpet.  If putting on carpet doesn’t seem as if it can REALLY help, think about this – If you practiced with correct position on your carpet for one hour, would your putting on the greens be better or worse?  Nuf said.
